A quick update to share my latest work. I have been commissioned to prepare a kill team based on the Slaneesh theme, but not the "pinky-deviant" version, something more like the Emperor's Children pre-heresy scheme.
The first squad consists of five marines and a Slaanesh lord. I must say the assembly job was quite painful since all minis were made out of resin parts from different producers, namely Kromlech, SpellCrow, GrimSkull and GW. Kromlech and SpellCrow propose very nice designs on their websites, but to be honest I was greatly disappointed by the quality of their casting. Most of the details were clogged or damaged and in some cases there was even a strong misalignment between the two parts of the mould. Maybe I was just unlucky but the parts I received did not rise up to their promises, by far ... Nevertheless I was able to correct most of those mistakes by re-sculpting the details and by adding Milliput wherever it was necessary. On the other hand GrimSkull minis were incredibly good, with tons of very well casted details. I even suspect they clean the parts and remove the mould lines before they ship it, very impressive anyways!
I got all necessary instructions from the customer, especially on the colour scheme, but I wanted these minis to standout even more so I decided to go for NMM armour plates instead of the usual mat look. I'm very pleased with the final results, I particularly like this shiny look when all minis stand together.
The squad of cultists was made from Warhammer furries with Esher bits. I paid a particular attention to the black leather covering the legs and the arms. Leather is an interesting material to paint, even more when it's black! I used same colours as for the NMM steel, i.e. variations of blueish greys, but this time I limited the size of the bright areas to preserve the overall black look. The hair was the funniest part, there I could really enjoy myself using colours I would never use elsewhere. I tried to setup a maximum contrast to obtain very bright colours, almost like a neon.
It took me a lot of time to complete this project but this was really a lot of fun and it forced me to go for colours or techniques I would not necessarily choose by myself. This was definitely a great experience, especially since the customer was also very please with the results. Let's hope my work will give him a great success on the battle field !
